It controls the ';butterfly'; inside the exhaust system which is a valve the controls the amount of backpressure. The ECM on the bike tells the servo motor when and how much to open this valve based on engine rpm. As the guy above stated, without it, the bike will perform very poorly. Eliminating this to install an aftermarket exhaust system USUALLY causes a decrease in mid-range HP %26amp; Torque (where you NORMALLY ride and need it the most), but can create higher HP numbers on the top end.
